2025-26 Season > Mozart’s Idomeneo
Boston Baroque proudly presents Idomeneo, the powerful opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that explores the tragic conflict between duty and love. Premiered in Munich in 1781 for the court of Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria, the opera was written at a time when Mozart was eager to establish himself as a serious composer of opera seria. Drawing on the classical tradition of Italian opera, he infused Idomeneo with unprecedented emotional depth, psychological realism, and dramatic sophistication. Each aria and ensemble is carefully crafted to reveal the inner conflicts of the characters, showcasing Mozart’s mastery of orchestration and his innovative approach to character development, rather than simply highlighting vocal virtuosity.
The libretto, based on a Greek myth, enabled Mozart to explore themes of duty, sacrifice, and human frailty. He pushed the boundaries of the form by blending the formal elegance of opera seria with sudden bursts of dramatic tension and expressive orchestral color. Notably, Idomeneo includes intricate ensembles, choruses, and orchestral passages that heighten the emotional stakes, a bold move for its time. Mozart’s score also hints at the influence of the Enlightenment, emphasizing moral dilemmas and the complex interplay of personal desire and social responsibility.
Set in the aftermath of the Trojan War, the opera follows King Idomeneo of Crete as he returns home from battle. When a violent storm threatens to destroy his fleet, he makes a desperate vow to Neptune that he will sacrifice the first living being he encounters upon reaching land if his life is spared. Fate intervenes when that person turns out to be his own son, Idamante. As Idomeneo struggles with the devastating promise he has made, a web of love, jealousy, and loyalty unfolds: Idamante and the Trojan princess Ilia fall deeply in love, while the fiery Elettra, daughter of Agamemnon, burns with jealous desire for Idamante.
This semi-staged production is led by conductor David Bates and stage director Bill Barclay and features an exceptional cast, including David Portillo as Idomeneo, Valerie Eickhoff as Idamante, Hera Hyesang Park as Ilia, Omar Najmi as Arbace, Wendy Bryn Harmer as Elettra, and Joel Clemens as La Voce.

SYNOPSIS
Mozart’s Idomeneo is a high-stakes tale of gods, love, and sacrifice set in the aftermath of the Trojan War.
As King Idomeneo sails home to Crete, a violent storm threatens to destroy his fleet. In desperation, he makes a solemn vow to Neptune: if spared, he will sacrifice the first soul he sees on shore. But fate is cruel—because the first person he encounters is his own son, Idamante.
While Idomeneo wrestles with an unspeakable decision, tensions on the island simmer. Idamante, unaware of the vow, is deeply in love with Ilia, a Trojan princess taken captive during the war. Ilia’s feelings are just as strong, but complicated by loyalty to her fallen homeland. Watching from the shadows is Elettra, the fiery and volatile daughter of Agamemnon, who burns with jealousy and obsession for Idamante.
As the gods grow impatient and a supernatural threat looms over Crete, Idomeneo’s secret begins to unravel. What follows is a whirlwind of political unrest, romantic turmoil, and divine wrath, brought to life through Mozart’s astonishing score.
With sweeping choruses, dramatic confrontations, and some of the most beautiful music Mozart ever wrote, Idomeneo is a rarely performed masterpiece that combines ancient myth with raw human emotion. Expect high drama, soaring vocals, and the thrill of watching destinies unravel onstage.
COMPOSER
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791)
One of the most extraordinary musical geniuses in history, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart displayed prodigious talent from an early age, composing, performing, and astonishing audiences across Europe before reaching adulthood. His music—remarkable for its beauty, emotional depth, and formal perfection—helped define the Classical era and continues to captivate listeners worldwide.
Composed when Mozart was just 25, Idomeneo is often considered his first true operatic masterpiece. Written for the court in Munich in 1781, it reflects the young composer’s deepening command of dramatic storytelling, orchestral color, and vocal expression. Blending the grandeur of opera seria with a new emotional sensitivity, Idomeneo foreshadows the powerful character development and musical richness that would come to define Mozart’s later operatic works, including The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute.
Through its exploration of fate, sacrifice, and mercy, Idomeneo reveals Mozart’s early brilliance in giving timeless human struggles a vivid musical voice.
