Daniel Zuluaga began his musical education in Colombia. His work on the Baroque guitar and theorbo has been praised for its “rhythmic vitality and a fine sense of color” (Joseph McLellan, Washington Post) and lauded as “exemplary” and full of “great inventiveness” (Joseph Sargent, San Francisco Classical Voice). A Juno award winner and Grammy and Félix awards nominee, he performs regularly with leading orchestras and ensembles as performer and guest director, including Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, Arion, Elyma, L’harmonie des saisons, Portland Baroque Orchestra, Belgium’s B’Rock, and the San Diego Bach Collegium. A specialist in Latin American Baroque music, his programming and leadership in the performance of the repertoire have earned him numerous critical accolades, lauding his performances as a “treasure with its own shimmer and gleam”(San Diego Tribune), “revelatory”, and “astounding at every turn” (San Diego Story). An avid researcher, he also holds a PhD in musicology. He has won several awards for musicological studies and grants from the Fulbright Commission, the Canada Council for the Arts and the American Musicological Society, as well as published articles on the early history of the guitar.
